This program will present the classic story of “Peter and The Wolf,” which is an adaptation of a traditional Russian folk tale set to music by the composer Sergei Prokofiev.

Music Carolina will perform the music with a live narrator telling the story. The group performing the music is called a woodwind quintet and has five instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn and bassoon. In addition, there is a percussionist.

Each character in the story has a particular instrument and a musical theme:

~Bird – Flute
~Duck – Oboe & English Horn
~Cat – Clarinet
~Grandfather – Bassoon
~Wolf – French Horn
~Hunters – The hunters' theme is introduced by the entire group.
~Peter – The theme for Peter is performed by all the players in the woodwind quintet.

Brianna Cantwell

Bassoonist Brianna Cantwell is an active freelancer from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She performs with The Carolina Philharmonic, Winston-Salem Symphony, Piedmont Wind Symphony, Western Piedmont Symphony, High Point Community Orchestra, and Salisbury Symphony. Brianna was a member of the Eastern Music Festival, Chamber Music Academy of Southern Germany, and Mallarmé Chamber Players 2021-22 Concert Series. When not teaching or performing, Brianna works in administration with a concentration in marketing, and she works as Communications Assistant for the Piedmont Wind Symphony and the Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competition and Symposium as their Social Media Intern. In her free time Brianna enjoys caring for her many plants and playing with her five cats, Maktub, Minka Mahler Theodore, Ophelia Ivelisse, and Owen. Brianna recently graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where she studied with Stephanie Patterson and Saxton Rose. She will be attending the Eastman School of Music starting in 2023.

Matthew Covington

Oboist Matthew Covington is a native of North Carolina and has been immersed in classical music all his life, beginning with singing and hearing his mother play violin. He followed this passion for music to UNC-Greensboro where he studied oboe with Ashley Barret, and has also performed in master classes for Joseph Robinson, Mark Ostoich, Jacqueline Leclair, and Andrew Parker.

Matthew currently holds positions with orchestras across NC, including the Greensboro Symphony, Western Piedmont Symphony, Carolina Philharmonic, Fayetteville Symphony, and Piedmont Wind Symphony; he also enjoys engaging in many types of chamber music.

Joe Mount

A native of Los Angeles, hornist Joe Mount moved Winston Salem in 1986 after becoming the Director of Outreach and Community Engagement at the UNC School of the Arts. He retired from UNCSA in 2015 after 29 years.

An active professional musician, Joe has been a member of the French horn section of the Winston-Salem Symphony since 1986. He also performs with the Greensboro Symphony, and is a member of the Giannini Brass. He is a founding member and co-artistic director of Music Carolina.

Joe holds an MA in Arts Administration from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, an MM from the UNC School of the Arts in Chamber Music. He also has a BM in Music Education from Wright State University. His teachers include Michael Hatfield and Fredrick Bergstone.

Jason McKinney

Singer, actor, composer, author, and advocate for the arts and humanity Jason McKinney has performed at the White House, the Kennedy Center, and famous opera houses and concert venues on 4 continents. He has performed sacred music in places of worship for 25 years, and is currently the Music Director at Temple Emanuel in Winston-Salem, NC. He is originally from Milwaukee WI, educated in Judaica at Hillel academy, and learned authentic New Orleans’ Jazz while earning a Bachelor’s degree from UNC School of the Arts. Previous international tours include Porgy and Bess, and his original works “Moments with Paul Robeson” and “Frederick, a Musical Narrative”.

Ronald Rudkin

Ronald Rudkin, saxophonist, clarinetist, and flutist was Director of the Jazz Program and Professor of Music Theory at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts for over four decades and retired in 2023. An active jazz and classical musician, Mr. Rudkin has performed regularly with his own jazz groups and dance band, plays clarinet with the Winston-Salem Symphony and Music Carolina, and has appeared with the North Carolina, Greensboro, Charlotte, and Western Piedmont Symphonies. Mr. Rudkin has performed with a diverse mix of celebrities from the worlds of jazz and entertainment and as a jazz clinician has conducted workshops across North Carolina.

Peter Shanahan

Peter Shanahan performs and teaches the flute throughout North Carolina and Virginia. He teaches at Radford University and the Winston-Salem Flute Academy and has performed with the Western Piedmont Symphony, Winston-Salem Symphony, Greensboro Symphony, Asheville Symphony, Charleston Symphony, and Piedmont Opera. Peter is a graduate of Indiana University and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

Bev Naiditch
